Kirche St. Johann Davos

Berglistutz 3, 7270 Davos Platz

The construction of the church of St. Johann begins with the settlement of the Davos high valley by the Walsers in the 13th century. Coming from the Valais, the first immigrants built their place of worship here in a protected location and thus gave the future settlement its centre. The last remains of the first valley church can still be seen in the lower part of the small tower. In 1481, the large tower with its height of 71.20 m was built, and the small tower was rebuilt. A fire caused by a lightning strike destroyed the spire, which had to be renewed in the 16th century. The current rotation of the spire by 43 percent is due to weathering. In 1928, the stained-glass artist Antonio Augusto Giacometti applied black solder to the four choir windows and painted them imaginatively under the theme “Paradise”.
