Herz-Jesu-Kirche

Aelastrasse 1, 7260 Davos Dorf

Davos was first mentioned in the episcopal archives in Chur in 1160. In the course of the Reformation, the Catholic parish lost all its churches in 1528. With the spa industry, however, Catholic life quickly flourished again. After St. Mary's Church was built on the square in 1892, the village also wanted its own church. After only one year of construction, the “Herz Jesu Kirche” was built in 1915 by architect N. Hartmann. It was thoroughly renovated in 1984. The organ was built in 1996. For the 100th anniversary in 2015, the old high altar retable was rebuilt, a statue of the Sacred Heart in the left choir aisle was acquired and a valuable baroque statue of “Maria Immaculata” was erected in the right choir aisle. With the original colouring, the “Herz Jesu Kirche” regained its neo-Romanesque appearance. The painted ceiling, the Art Nouveau altar and the sandstone capitals on the choir arches are considered to be of art-historical significance. Today, the catholic parish and church community with its three churches, is identical with the area of the Davos countryside.
