The Lunies family has long ceased to be a family: life has caused the paths of parents and children to drift apart. The elderly Lissy Lunies is unable to cope with her husband, who is suffering from dementia, and she doesn't have much time left to live herself due to illness. Her son Tom is a kind of surrogate father to his ex-girlfriend's newborn child. Meanwhile, Tom's sister Ellen begins an affair with a married man and gets caught up in a seemingly irreversible love and cocktail frenzy.
