The new downhill run on the Jakobshorn

1k Vertical

Jasmine Flury skis down the new valley run on the Jakobshorn in Davos.

«The 1k Vertical slope is no piece of cake for me either»

A black valley run in the Jakobshorn ski area leads directly from the "Usser Isch" to the center of Davos Platz. The slope is reminiscent of the snowy forests of the American Rocky Mountains and offers an adventurous skiing experience with a drop of 1000 meters. Our ski ambassador Jasmine Flury shows in the video how the new route is.

What began as an idea six years ago has been a reality since the 2023/24 winter season: a new valley run on the Jakobshorn enriches the popular ski area. Ski fans overcome 1000 meters of vertical drop from the Jakobshorn mountain station via the valley station of the "Usser Isch" chairlift on a direct route to Davos Platz. This piste experience is therefore called "1k Vertical Jakobshorn". One of the fans is a prominent Davos resident: downhill world champion Jasmine Flury. "I really like the piste - and it is very challenging," says the two-time World Cup winner. "It's fantastic that there is now a sporty and attractive valley run from the Jakobshorn to Davos."

The black run is a long-awaited addition to the ski area. In the past, the existing Gämpen valley run often became congested. Now, the new run offers experienced skiers and snowboarders an exciting alternative. At the same time, the Gämpen run remains a safe option for less experienced skiers and snowboarders. The expanded range of slopes not only provides more variety but also helps to minimize the risk of accidents. Furthermore, the new run connects the Jakobshorn with the popular practice area at Bolgen in the valley. And for those who want to go back up into the ski area: the new access point at the mid-station of the Carjöl chairlift makes it possible.

The location of the new valley run below the Carjöler chairlift was carefully chosen by the mountain railway company to minimize its environmental impact. The new slope was constructed with minimal intervention in the terrain. A newly built reservoir and a pumping station at the "Usser Isch" ensure resource-efficient snowmaking. At the end of a day on the slopes, guests can ski directly to the center of Davos Platz via the new run. There, they will find a wide selection of restaurants, hotels, and entertainment options. Thanks to the excellent public transport connections via Davos Platz train station and the convenient onward travel options by car, the Jakobshorn has become even more attractive.

Jasmine Flury's tips for the valley descent

    Pay attention to the conditions

"The conditions vary depending on the snow and weather. On my first run on the new track, the ground was hard and icy. Then there is the gradient: in some places it is extremely steep. But it is precisely these challenges that make the black run exciting."

What else should you pay attention to?

"When it's hard and icy, it's important to have well-prepared skis with sharp edges. It shouldn't necessarily be the first black piste you ski. And if you do, go slowly."

Après-ski and valley run, a good idea?

Das Jakobshorn hat mit der neuen Talabfahrt 1k Vertical Davos ein neues Pistenhighlight erhalten.

"If you have stayed in the Jatzhütte for a little longer, it is better to choose the easier descent into the valley - or, even safer, return to Davos by cable car."
