There are few ski resorts that are as perfectly adapted for families with small children and people with disabilities as Madrisa. And no wonder: in the kids’ snow parks, Madrisa Land and Madrisa Park Klosters, there’s a special practice area. Four are three magic carpets to carry the little skiers up to the top. And with a snowbike (available to hire from Intersport at the mountain station), you can ride down the slope sitting down, with your skis strapped on – perfect if you’re new to skiing. While the kids practice their first turns at the three practice lifts, parents can explore the ski resort, which boasts 23 kilometres of slopes. If there’s enough snow, the highlights of this resort include the 7.7-kilometre sledge run down to Saas, the winter hiking trails to Mässplatte and to Zügenhüttli, as well as the new snowshoe trail Mässplatte are among the highlights.
Having a physical disability doesn’t mean you have to miss out on winter sports. At least, not on Madrisa. The cable car and the mountain restaurant are wheelchair-accessible. The six-person Schaffürggli chairlift is also suitable for skiers with monoskis. And best of all: the safety bar lifts and lowers automatically. The seat height also adjusts automatically – ensuring a comfortable ride for all skiers. News of this accessible resort has got around: every winter, veterans with war injuries come from the UK to visit.
Speaking of which: Madrisa Land is the first adventure park in the Swiss Alps that makes playing possible for physically and visually impaired children. The Kinderland scores with marble run, bouncy castle, slides, water games and swings. Everything there for children to let off steam. Tip: During the summer season, the life-size mascot, Hen Hanna, can be seen on some Sundays. And families who want to stay longer can also stay overnight in the local tree huts or in the new star suite.
Alongside its family-friendly facilities, Madrisa is also a popular sports destination all year round. Ski tourers and free riders love the Madrisa round trip to Austria and back. This route is also popular in summer as a hiking trail on former smuggler paths. Trail runners will pass spectacular ridges – and paragliders can take off from the launch point near the Schaffürggli chair lift. All that not enough for you? A 3D archery course and monster scooters make for some fantastic summer action.
