“My paintings should hang next to Picasso’s,” Ernst Ludwig Kirchner once wrote. This wish is now becoming a reality. From February 15th, the Kirchner Museum Davos will present a comprehensive juxtaposition of the two artists and tell their story. The two were born almost simultaneously: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in 1880 in Aschaffenburg, Germany, and Pablo Picasso in 1881 in Malaga, Spain. “Both were revolutionary in their time and created their own worlds,” says Katharina Beisiegel, director of the Kirchner Museum and curator of “Kirchner. Picasso.”
Beisiegel has been nurturing the idea for this exhibition for almost a decade. Its realization required three years of planning and work. “We are the first project to present the paintings of Pablo Picasso and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in a comprehensive comparison. This is unique worldwide.” Visitors can look forward to hundreds of works from leading European museums and private collections.
The exhibition “Kirchner. Picasso» opens on Sunday, February 15th with a public opening and runs until May 3rd, 2026.
