Sunniberg Bridge lighting

Published : 09. December 2025

From December 9th, the Sunniberg Bridge will be illuminated with colorful projections. The occasion is the bridge's 20th anniversary. Four more facts about the milestone birthday.

From December 9th to 14th and from December 24th to January 3th, the Sunniberg Bridge will be bathed in a very special light each evening: Between 5 pm and 10 pm, the bridge will be illuminated with various colored and alternating motifs featuring scenes from Klosters. The light art is created by four high-powered projectors positioned centrally at the bridge. The illumination will feature a variety of images: from the Swiss cross and the coats of arms of Graubünden and Klosters, to a special highlight: the paper-cut patterns by local artist Monika Flütsch, specially prepared for the anniversary illumination, lending the bridge an artistic and regional touch.

The Sunniberg Bridge is the centerpiece of the Klosters bypass, an architectural landmark of the region – and since 2022, even a climbing park. It is equally appreciated by visitors and locals alike. So far, so familiar.

But did you also know that…
…the Sunniberg Bridge was officially opened on December 9, 2005, by King Charles III and the then Federal President Moritz Leuenberger?

…the idea for this impressive structure came from the late bridge engineer and ETH professor Christian Menn? The project was implemented by the engineering firm Bänziger Partner in collaboration with the architect Andrea Deplazes.

…the 526-meter-long Sunniberg Bridge is a so-called cable-stayed bridge? The very gently inclined cables support the weight of the roadway and traffic. The forces are transferred to the foundations via four outward-leaning piers.

…construction began in 1996 and was completed approximately 2.5 years later? However, it was not opened to traffic until December 9, 2005 – together with the Gotschna Tunnel, which was planned at the same time.
