Alpabzug Klosters – the most important information at a glance

Published : 04. September 2025

On September 13, Klosters, Monbiel, becomes the scene of living alpine tradition: The Alpabzug (alpine descent) brings festively decorated animals back to the valley. What to expect—and what you should know before your visit.

When summer gives way to the mountains, the time of homecoming begins. The traditional Alpabzug in Monbiel symbolizes the end of the alpine summer and honors the work of the Alpine dairy families. Visitors can stand along the roadside along the entire parade route and watch the impressive spectacle up close.

4 Facts about the Alpabzug

  • The Alpabzug originally began as a necessary, practical procession in which the cattle were brought down to the valley after the alpine season. This developed into a veritable festival.
  • For the parade, cows in particular are elaborately decorated with wreaths of flowers, mostly sunflowers, dahlias, and chrysanthemums. This headdress is called "Tschäppl."
  • The parade is accompanied by the loud ringing of bells, which is intended to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck for the coming winter.
  • The tradition spans generations and is deeply rooted in the customs of the Walser villages in the Prättigau and Landwasser valleys.

After the parade, the herds gather in the village pasture, while visitors can discover market stalls, a tombola, and culinary offerings. Face painting and a bouncy castle are available for the little ones, before the evening continues with the Älpler-Lusi until late into the night.
