The Sertig Classic is known for its friendly atmosphere and the unique natural scenery along the course. Around two hundred cross-country skiing enthusiasts participate in the popular race each year, from hobbyists to professionals. The name says it all: the race is exclusively for classic technique. Both classic and skating skis are permitted. The latter are used by skiers who tackle the course using the demanding double-poling technique. "But there are only a handful of those," says organizing committee president Markus Kehl. Kehl himself is a passionate cross-country skier, but he has never participated in the Sertig Classic. For a simple reason: he founded the event together with friends and has served as president since its inception in February 2016. "I always dreamed of creating a cross-country race for everyone."
Tips for recreational cross-country skiers
Skiers can choose between a half marathon (21 kilometers) or the "Drizehner" (13 kilometers). The race begins on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. with a mass start at the Davos Cross-Country Skiing Center. The "Drizehner" (a 11-kilometer race) is not only shorter but also has fewer kilometers of elevation gain. Ideal for newcomers to competition. Markus Kehl has a few tips for recreational athletes. "Don't start too fast and pace yourself well. The course initially leads pleasantly downhill, but it gets tough after the 'Knochenmühle' (a steep, challenging section)." At Bäbi, the last aid station, you'll soon have made it. "Your legs will feel heavy, but the view towards the finish line and the Sertig mountain scenery is motivating and creates a feeling of happiness."
Pasta and Conviviality
Almost a tradition at the end of the race is the pasta dinner with traditional Swiss folk music at the Hotel Walserhuus. "Consistency is part of what makes the Sertig Classic special. We're not changing anything about the program or the course this year either – and we receive many compliments from the athletes who return every year," says Markus Kehl. Anyone born in 2012 or later is eligible to participate. Good health and a certain level of fitness are required. Online registration is open until February 12th. Late registrations will be accepted on February 14th between 2 pm and 5 pm at the Race Office in the Davos Cross-Country Skiing Centre.
