In 1979, Azar and her husband Bijan returned to their hometown of Tehran from the USA. Azar, newly graduated with a doctorate in literature, wants to teach in her home country. But shortly after their arrival, their future becomes darker: the Iranian revolution breaks out. Azar is oppressed by the new regime in his job, family and everyday life. But she refuses to give up. Instead of turning away from the now banned literature, she organizes intellectual resistance together with six of her committed students. Like the heroines of Nabokov, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Henry James or Jane Austen, the women in Nafisi's living room dare to dream, hope and love. The film is based on the autobiographical book by the real Azar Nafisi and impressively tells of resilience, cohesion and hope.
