Santosh is just 28 years old when her husband dies in a riot. Through a programme run by the Indian government, she inherits his post in the provincial police force. The experienced policewoman Sharma takes her under her wing and together they begin to investigate the murder of a girl from a lower caste. Santosh is confronted with the harsh reality of patriarchal power structures, in which corruption and arbitrariness, but also the fearful silence of the victim's family, are the order of the day. Her mentor shows her how she can assert herself as a woman in this system. But at what price?
