Rohrmühle
Mills, sawmills and other water-powered facilities shaped the cultural landscape of Graubünden until the 19th century.
Klosters once boasted around twenty grain mills. With the development of the Prättigau region by road and rail, grain cultivation declined sharply, as imported grain was cheaper than growing it in the mountains. Consequently, the mills disappeared. The "Untere Rohrmühle" (Lower Rohr Mill) was repaired and used one last time during the First World War. In 1918, Fritz Schoellhorn purchased the mill for CHF 120.00 to preserve it as a testament to traditional machinery. In 1954, his son, Dr. Georg Schoellhorn, donated the Rohrmühle, along with the Nutlihüschi (a small, historic building), to the municipality of Klosters. The mill has been gradually renovated since 1980 and has been fully operational again since 1997. Visits are possible by appointment on Friday afternoons during the summer.
