Zügen gorge reopens from 7 June

Zügenschlucht in Davos

The Zügen gorge will be open to the public again starting this Pentecost weekend. Caution is still advised: Due to its course along steep rock faces, there is an increased risk of rockfall on this popular hiking trail.

The approximately four-kilometer-long hiking and biking trail between Schmelzboden and Wiesen is one of the most popular routes in the Davos Klosters region. Its spectacular location amidst steep rock faces and easy accessibility by public transport make it particularly attractive. At the same time, however, the trail also carries certain risks: Due to the imposing cliffs, the danger of rockfall is particularly high in many places, and in spring, avalanches often lead to accumulations of debris and wood.

The affected areas are now already carefully cleared, and the current hazard situation was again comprehensively assessed. Last year, the route was already classified as a mountain hiking trail (white-red-white). This marking indicates an increased risk from natural hazards such as rockfall.

Proceed with caution

To minimize exposure to danger, the infrastructure along the trail that would have encouraged longer breaks has been removed. The exception is the Brumbänz area, with its fireplace, benches, and tables – there you can still take a break safely. In general, however, the following applies: The time spent in the gorge should be kept as short as possible. For safety reasons, walking or cycling through it is strongly discouraged in the event of rain or storms.

During the summer, construction work is also expected along the trail. This may lead to temporary restrictions, but passage will always be guaranteed. Any diversions will be signaled on site.

At the entrances to the Zügenschlucht, signs provide information about current hazards and the correct behavior along the trail.

Excursion tip

A hike through the Zügen gorge can be ideally combined with a visit to the RhB's new Landwasserwelt. The easy one-hour hike takes you from Davos Monstein station through the impressive gorge to Wiesen station. If you wish, you can continue the hiking trail from there via the Sky Walk over the Wiesner Viaduct to Filisur.
