Brazil, 1977. Marcelo, an academic in his mid-40s, is on the run. He arrives in Recife during the exuberant carnival week to see his son again and, thanks to a supportive network, finds shelter underground. With attention to detail, idiosyncratic characters and subtle humour, Kleber Mendonça Filho (Aquarius) paints a stylised picture of the final years of the military regime and develops it into a phenomenal political thriller. ‘Narcos’ star Wagner Moura shines in the lead role, for which he was awarded the Best Actor prize at Cannes, while Kleber Mendonça Filho received the Best Director award at the same festival.
