Marienkirche

Praviganweg, 7270 Davos Platz

Davos was first mentioned in the bishop's archives in Chur in 1160. In the course of the Reformation, the Catholic parish lost all its churches in 1528. However, Catholic life quickly flourished again with the spa. At first, the Davos Catholics were looked after from Schmitten (Albula) and Holy Masses were celebrated in the ref. church of St. Johann. In 1879, with donations from Tyrol and France, the "Maria Schnee" chapel was built at its present location in the Guggerbach Centre. The neo-Romanesque MARIENKIRCHE was completed in 1892 by architect A. Hardegger as the town parish church on the square. It is the largest church in the Davos countryside. The altars and stained glass windows from the Schnell Studio in Ravensburg dating from 1912 are of great artistic value. After a modern redesign in 1978 (altar reliefs by Sr. Caritas Müller of the Cazis Monastery), the MARIENKIRCHE was completely renovated in 2012 and listed as a historical monument. Organ expansion in 2017, forecourt and Marian grotto in 2021, bell expansion to 7 bells (second heaviest bell in the canton) in 2021. Today, the Catholic parish and church community with its three churches is identical with the area of the Davos countryside.
