Energiestadt Davos – energy town Davos

In 2001, Davos became the first district in the canton of Grisons to be officially awarded the coveted "energy town label” by the Federal Department for Energy and the awarding body.

As an energy town, Davos undertakes to operate a sustainable and results-orientated energy policy. The energy town is introducing measures to improve its CO2 balance and reinforces climate protection. Davos is aiming to become energy self-sufficient by 2036. The project “MountEnergy – Energiemodell Davos” sprung from this aim and wants to even the path for this development.

As one of the first congress centres ever, the Davos Congress Centre was awarded the certificates ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. This means the centre boasts internationally recognised quality standards in management procedures and environmental guidelines. The solar plant on the roof of Davos Congress Centre demonstrates sustainability in action and underlines the efforts Hanwha, one of the world’s leading solar power companies, is making to reduce CO2 emissions and to strengthen the public’s awareness for the value of renewables. Such awards are proof of the weighty role the region is playing in the area of energy and environment. Many companies make the region Davos Klosters a European centre of power in this sunrise industry. Also, the hotels in Davos are making every effort to become more environmentally responsible.

The Swiss rarely brag about how sustainable they are: two thirds of the Swiss energy supply is generated from renewable sources, mainly from hydro-power. In addition, we are the world’s number one in consistent and systematic recycling (96% glass, 90% aluminium, 77% paper, 76% PET) and have an exemplary waste management system, strict emission policies, carefully regulated town and country planning as well as stringent building regulations. By the way, Switzerland has many environmentally friendly activities such as e-bike tours to offer and provides plenty of volunteering opportunities in landscape projects etc.

Possible plant visits and speakers on request.
