Snowfarming

Snow farming Davos

Snow farming is a key concept in snow management. We have been covering a mound of snow with sawdust every spring since 2008. This snow is used in the autumn to prepare a cross-country ski trail before new snow can be produced. Covering the snow means that we can retain around 70-80% of the volume, which enables the resort to start the season earlier, regardless of the temperatures in autumn.

The 4 km long snow farming cross-country skiing trail is open and can be used by both athletes and amateurs.

Snow farming in Davos was extended in autumn of 2015 with the construction of a new infrastructure. Three times the volume of snow could be produced and stored during the winter of 2015/16. This over-summered snow is used in late-autumn to create a 4 km long cross-country trail in the lower Flüela Valley.

Training hours and prices of snow farming cross-country skiing trails

The trails in Davos are made available to various user groups. Based on the "NASAK services – cross-country skiing slopes", the snow farming and World Cup trails should primarily be available to elite and development level athletes. In order to use the two trails best possible, the following principles apply for periods of heavy utilisation (during the first pre-winter weeks from end-October to mid-December) until the opening of the natural trails.
