The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF has been in existence since 1942. In 1996 it moved from the Weissfluhjoch to Davos Dorf. The institute is well-known to the public because of the avalanche bulletins it issues twice daily in winter (approx. November to approx. May). About 130 people work at the institute researching topics connected with snow, natural alpine hazards, the alpine living space and integral risk management.
Exhibition & Guided Visits
For those interested there is an exhibition for the general public every Wednesday afternoon entitled Snow – Natural Hazards – Living Space the Alps.
Every Friday or at a time to be arranged, there are guided visits round the institute.
The Swiss Institute for Asthma and Allergy Research SIAF stems from the former medical department of the Swiss Research Institute founded at the behest of Dr. Karl Turban, the Davos Doctors' Association and the town of Davos. During that time research was concentrated on tuberculosis, whereas nowadays the emphasis is on immunology and its connection to allergies in particular asthma and atopic skin diseases. The researchers hope that diagnostic and therapeutic treatments will result from the knowledge gained.
The AO Research Institute was founded in 1959 as a laboratory for experimental surgery by the Association for the Study of Internal Fixation. It is a privately funded institute belonging to the worldwide AO Foundation established in 1984.
Research is geared to solving the surgical problems involved during the treatment of injured people and animals. As well as research into biomechanics, biology, biochemistry, molecular biology and materials the AO team develops new surgical procedures and implants which lead to new patient treatment methods.
Through publications, courses, conferences and seminars, the AO disseminates the AO principles and findings on fracture management to the worldwide surgical community. The Davos institute provides the technical infrastructure for the Davos AO courses. So far more than 213'000 specialists have profited from the teaching courses on methods of dealing with fractures.
The Physical Meteorological Observatory Davos PMOD was founded in 1907 as a private institute to research sunlight and its characteristics. It has been a part of the foundation «Swiss Research Institute for Alpine Climate and medicine» since 1922. Atmospheric radiation measurement is the most important field of activity. In 1971 the PMOD/WRC was designated by the World Meteorological Organisation WMO as a World Radiation Center WRC. The PMOD / WRC is responsible for worldwide homogeneity in the measuring of radiation. The PMOD/WRC maintains a radiation reference comparable to the UR-kilogram in Paris.
